Quick Guide: Which Level Is Right for You?
Not sure where to start? Use these rules of thumb:
$1M – $2M
Suitable if you have low public contact, work primarily from home or your own premises, and are not entering commercial building sites. Home-based sole traders, tutors, consultants, and many service providers.
$2M – $5M
The standard range for most small businesses, residential trade contractors, and any business with regular customer or client contact. Required by most commercial leases and residential building contracts.
$5M – $10M
Required for commercial trade work, most government contracts, and high-footfall businesses. The minimum for most Auckland Transport and Waka Kotahi infrastructure contracts.
$10M – $20M
For major construction, demolition, large-scale events, and infrastructure projects where a single incident could affect many people or result in catastrophic property losses.
